Experience Living Light at a PyroFarms Night Tour

There’s something unforgettable about seeing bioluminescence come alive in the dark.
At PyroFarms Night Tours in Carlsbad, California, guests get an up-close look at the science, beauty, and wonder of living light. These after-dark events are designed to be part science experience, part behind-the-scenes tour, and part glowing spectacle—with plenty of opportunities to see bioluminescence in ways you simply can’t during the daytime.
Our Night Tours take place at PyroFarms, where we grow and work with PyroDinos®—living marine dinoflagellates capable of producing brilliant blue bioluminescence when stimulated by movement.
And once the lights go down, things start to glow.
What Is a PyroFarms Night Tour?
A PyroFarms Night Tour is an evening experience built around one of nature’s most fascinating phenomena: bioluminescence.
Guests visit our Carlsbad facility after dark and get to see how we grow PyroDinos, learn a little about the biology behind their glow, and experience several interactive and experimental bioluminescent displays.
Unlike seeing bioluminescent waves at the beach—which can be unpredictable and dependent on the right natural conditions—a Night Tour gives guests a chance to experience living light in a more intimate and controlled setting.
You’ll see what happens when billions of microscopic organisms respond to motion with flashes of electric blue light.
See Bioluminescence Up Close
One of the best parts of a Night Tour is simply being able to slow down and really look at bioluminescence.
In the ocean, the glow can happen quickly beneath a breaking wave or around your feet in the surf. At PyroFarms, we can demonstrate the phenomenon in clear vessels, flowing water, fountains, and other custom displays that let you see the individual flashes and patterns more closely.
A gentle swirl can create a galaxy of tiny blue sparks.
A stronger movement can suddenly illuminate an entire vessel.
And flowing water can transform bioluminescence into something that looks almost otherworldly.

The Underwater Bioluminescent Fountain
One of our favorite Night Tour features is our custom underwater bioluminescent fountain and wishing well.
Instead of using colored lights or LEDs, the blue glow comes from living PyroDinos. As the water moves through the fountain, the mechanical stimulation triggers bioluminescence, producing glowing streams and flashes beneath the surface.
It combines biology, engineering, and a little bit of experimentation into a display that is very difficult to appreciate through a photograph alone.
You really need to see it in the dark.
A Behind-the-Scenes Look at PyroFarms
Night Tours also give visitors a glimpse into what happens behind the scenes at PyroFarms.
We’ve spent years growing, experimenting with, photographing, filming, and developing new ways to display bioluminescent dinoflagellates. During the tour, we share some of what we’ve learned along the way—from the basic biology of PyroDinos to the conditions that help cultures grow and produce strong bioluminescence.
You don’t need a science background to enjoy the tour. We keep things approachable and hands-on, while still giving curious visitors plenty to explore.
Kids often have a completely different set of questions than adults—which is part of what makes every tour a little different.

More Than Just a Demonstration
We like to think of Night Tours as an opportunity to experience bioluminescence rather than simply watch a presentation about it.
Throughout the evening, guests may see different vessels, experiments, flowing-water demonstrations, and other glowing displays we’ve developed at PyroFarms.
Because PyroDinos are alive, no two nights are exactly identical. Their brightness can vary, displays evolve, and we’re constantly experimenting with new ways to create movement and reveal their glow.
That means returning guests may discover something completely new the next time they visit.

Take Some Living Light Home
One of the most exciting things about PyroDinos is that bioluminescence doesn’t have to end when the tour does.
Night Tour guests have the opportunity to take home PyroDinos and continue the experience themselves. With daily light, nighttime darkness, and basic care, these microscopic organisms can continue growing and producing bioluminescence at home.
It’s one thing to see living light during a tour.
It’s another to have a glowing culture sitting on your own desk or bookshelf and realize that what you’re seeing is being produced by living organisms.

A Unique Night Out in Carlsbad
If you’re looking for something different to do in North County San Diego, a PyroFarms Night Tour is definitely not your typical evening activity.
It’s great for families, couples, science lovers, photographers, ocean enthusiasts, students, and anyone who has ever stood on a dark beach hoping to catch a glimpse of glowing waves.
Whether you come for the science or simply want to see something beautiful, there’s a special moment when the room gets dark, the water begins to move, and suddenly everything flashes blue.
That moment never gets old.
Come See the Glow
PyroFarms Night Tours are offered on select evenings at our facility in Carlsbad, California, and attendance is limited so guests can experience the displays up close.
We continue to add new experiments, exhibits, and glowing creations, so each event gives us another opportunity to share what we love about bioluminescence.
If you’ve followed PyroFarms online, seen our glowing videos, or grown PyroDinos at home, a Night Tour is your chance to see what happens when we bring all of those ideas together after dark.
Come experience living light for yourself.
