How to Make Your Own Artificial Seawater for PyroDino® Cultures

Whether you're expanding your PyroDino® culture, topping off a display, or starting a new GrowPro project, making your own artificial seawater is simple and economical. With high-quality sea salt and purified water, you can create a stable marine environment that your dinoflagellates will thrive in.

Here's our recommended method.

What You'll Need

  • GrowPro Sea Salt
  • Distilled water (recommended for the purest results)
  • A clean mixing container
  • A hydrometer or refractometer to measure salinity
  • DinoNutrients or Concentrated DinoNutrients (optional, for enriching the water)

Step 1: Measure Your Water

Start with the amount of distilled water needed for your project. Always use a clean container free of soap residue or contaminants.

Tip: Distilled water produces the most consistent results because it contains virtually no dissolved minerals.


Step 2: Add the Sea Salt

Mix 38 grams of GrowPro Sea Salt per liter of water.

If you're making larger batches, this works out to approximately ½ to ¾ cup of GrowPro Sea Salt per gallon, though measuring by weight is always the most accurate method.


Step 3: Dissolve Completely

Slowly add the sea salt while stirring continuously. Continue mixing until the solution becomes completely clear and no undissolved crystals remain.

Properly dissolved salt ensures the minerals are evenly distributed throughout the water.


Step 4: Verify the Salinity

Use a hydrometer or refractometer to measure the specific gravity.

For healthy PyroDino cultures, aim for a specific gravity between 1.022 and 1.026.

If the reading is low, add a little more sea salt. If it's high, dilute with additional distilled water until you reach the desired range.


Step 5: Let the Water Stabilize (Optional)

Many hobbyists like to let freshly mixed seawater sit for about 24 hours before using it.

While this isn't required, allowing the water to rest can help stabilize the solution and ensure everything is fully dissolved.


Step 6: Sterilize the Seawater

Before adding the seawater to your culture, sterilize it to minimize the introduction of unwanted microorganisms.

Several methods work well:

  • Germicidal UV sterilization
  • 0.2-micron filtration
  • Microwave heating
  • Pressure cooker or autoclave

After sterilization, allow the water to cool completely and recheck the salinity, since evaporation during heating can slightly increase salt concentration.


Step 7: Enrich the Water (Optional)

For even better growth, enrich your artificial seawater with DinoNutrients or Concentrated DinoNutrients.

Introduce New Seawater Gradually

Freshly prepared seawater can differ slightly from your existing culture water, even when mixed carefully.

For the first few feedings, we recommend replacing no more than 10% of the total culture volume with your new artificial seawater. This allows your PyroDinos time to acclimate to the new conditions.

Once they've adjusted over several feedings, you can comfortably increase the percentage of new seawater used during maintenance or culture expansion.

  • Store unused seawater in a sealed container to prevent contamination.
  • Label batches with the date they were prepared.
  • Verify salinity each time before use, especially if the water has been stored for an extended period.
