Satellite images algae bloom on Lake Ponchartrain
Unseasonably warm weather, among other factors, allowed the algae bloom to grow rapidly on the lake's northern side.  The river water can also carry fertilizer, which provides nutrients that allow the algae to bloom.  Why a bloom occurs in nature is still not fully understood as there are other unknown variables that may contribute to a bloom.
